A balanced diet, good portion control, regular exercises (like walking), not smoking or drinking to excess, and trying not to stress over things we certainly cannot change. Do that and you'll have to greatest chance of a lifetime of good health. That doesn't mean you will never get an illness or disease. Plenty of athletes have come down with diseases despite having excellent nutrition and exercise programs. Sometime it's just the unluck of the draw. Sometimes it's genetic.
I have the advantage of being able to work with a lot of elderly people. Most of the older patients I see (over 80), who've maintained good health, didn't eat health foods, avoid meat, take mega doses of vitamins and supplements, or go to the gym. They ate bacon, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and occasionally ice cream. They walked or worked in jobs that required physical activity. They never let themselves become obese, or lose their flexibility. I say, stick with what's been proven to work best.

The desire to be totally disease-free is normal. That is what 'Ayurveda' school of medicine is all about, and the old Sanskrit saying "May everyone remain healthy and without disease" reinforces it.
Sure! Eat lots of fresh vegetables, fruits (At least 5 servings every day!), cut out Fast-foods, fried foods, meats and Burgers, .....exercise daily, go for a brisk walk daily, inhale fresh air......... and bask in the sunshine of health!!
It works!!! I am 63, enjoying a disease-free, energetic, enjoyable healthy life!
