Were you ever in an accident or have some kind of trauma involving you being the car, or someone you loved? Perhaps therapy would help but first try slowly acclimating yourself to being inside the car. Sit in it in the driveway for 'x' amount of minutes with the motor off and see how you handle that. Gradually working up to sitting in the driveway (NOT the garage) and eventually taking the car out for a drive. It may take time and won't occur overnight but keep at it and try to find the root of your fear.
My particular phobia is of frogs. When I was a teenager, my girlfriend and I were walking through an alley after a rain when I saw a frog sitting on the side. I squealed and ran a few steps to get away from the "slimy thing" when my gf picked it up and ran after me with it. She caught up to me and shoved it down the back of my shirt. That was 40 years ago and I'm still terrified of them but at least I can look at them behind glass now...like at zoos, without hyperventilating. Joni, if you read this, I'm sure you remember that night too!!!

I'm scared of escalators. When I was a little kid I thought they would sink in and swallow me after I step on them. I'm 50 years old now and they still make me a little nervous when I take the first step to get on it and grab the hand rail at the same time; I'm always a little scared that I'm going to fall or something. Once I'm on there and moving, it doesn't bother me though--it's just the act of getting on the thing at the first place. I may have some good reason for feeling that way, since I've always been kind of clumsy, and I can't control the speed of the escalator. I take stairs instead of escalators if I have the choice.

I'm scared of pickles and lice (even though I've never had them). Concentrate on other things while in the car (thoughts) or have music that you like on. Maybe that will help.
Oh yeah, I'm also scared to swim in the deep end (even though I'm a really strong swimmer) because I'm afraid that I'll be sucked down to the bottom.

I don't know if it is a phobia, per se, but I can't stand to see cranberry sauce.. You know, the jello-y kind that comes out of a can. At Thanksgiving dinner I cannot be in view of it at all or it makes me gag. I don't even want to see the cans in the aisle at the grocery store.

They say the best way to get over your fear is to envision what makes you afraid, then see yourself overcoming it, then being confident in yourself, then actually facing your fear.
My goofy phobia is fish. Not sharks, but like, lil sunnies. Swimming in lakes can cause me to hyperventilate, but i do it anyway just because it makes me angry to think an itty bitty fish is gonna keep me from having fun. Most of the time i can face it and get over it, but sometimes i just hafta get outta the water and pretend I'd rather be sunbathing. Hope this helps.

Me too. I used to get panic attacks whenever I would be in a car. They would have to stop so I could get down and take deep breaths.
