He (Drona) owed his allegiance to Hastinapur and hence he defended Hastinapur by fighting against Pandavas which included his favourite disciple Arjuna. Besides he very well knew that Arjuna and his brothers are on the righteous path and ultimately they will win under the guidance of Lord Krishna but Duryodhan needs guidance to walk on right path.

DRONA was not bound by any Vow or promise to anyone but he was duty bound. Drona strongly condemns the wicked prince Duryodhana and his brothers for their abusive treatment of the Pandavas, and for usurping their kingdom by sending them into exile. But being a servant of Hastinapura, ruled by King Dhritarashtra. Drona is bound by duty to fight for the Kauravas, and thus against his favorite Pandavas and even his own very favourite and loved disciple Arjuna.-

Drona was paid by the King Dhritharasthra. After teaching the students he did not leave his employment but remained on the pay rolls. Being an employee he had to fight on the side of his master.

The whole war is among relatives and brothers. Here the only thing we have to look into is the ISSUE.
