Puja ritual is a religious ritual that Hindus perform on a variety of occasions to pray or show respect to God. Most practicing Hindus pray once or twice a day. Pujas are reserved for special occasions like house warming. Puja should be done after a shower or bath and it is recommended that rites be performed before food intake.
Puja may be performed by an individual worshipper or in gatherings. The ritual may be observed in silence or accompanied by prayers.

PUJA RITUALS IN HINDUISM -

With the many deities and gods in the Hindu religion, ritual is a very important aspect of the devout Hindu. The rituals range from the daily pujas, to the very elaborate shrautas and rites of passage rituals.
The daily ritual of puja is performed in a sacred corner in a worship room of the home. It is done to keep Hindus aware of their family gods and mindful of their duties as individuals. The ritual of puja has three steps. The first is seeing the family deity (darshana). A small statue or picture of the god is placed in the sacred corner. The second step is the worship of the god, or puja. The worshiper offers the god flowers, fruits, and cooked food (bhog). The third step is retrieving the blessed food (prasada) and consuming it. This is thought to bring the deity down to earth and brings the person closer to them.

There are special rituals that only the priests, or brahmin, can perform. These are called the shrauta rituals and are very complex and elaborate sacrifices to the god Agni. These "fire-sacrifice" rituals are to bring out the central element of power of gods and nature through the fire. In some cases, the brahmins are paid by individuals to perform these sacrifices for the buyer's benefit.

Puja refers to worship, particularly of the sacred image. Each sampradaya (denomination) has elaborate rules for its performance, and the practical details vary considerably. Puja usually involves bathing and dressing the deity and offering various auspicious items, such as water, perfume, and flowers. It often culminates in the offering of food, and is immediately followed by the arti ceremony. Puja generally includes a minimum of 16 devotional acts.Worship offered at home is usually a scaled-down version of the grand temple services. It may be offered daily or just once a week, whereas scheduled temple worship must continue daily from early morning to late evening. Puja is usually considered an act of devotional service to God or the chosen deity.-
