No, only take whey protein right after your workouts. You can take it for breakfast or something, but it isn't going to make any difference with strength and muscle mass building.

I take one scoop of whey protein everyday, regardless of if I am going to workout or not. You don't have to take it, but you can.

Rule of thumb:
1 gram of protein per pound of body weight every day.

Protein powders are used as a supplement. It make it easier to hit your daily quota.

if you're trying to gain mass, yea. the days you rest are the days your muscles do most of their growing. it allows them to recover faster/better.
