12 hours on a good day; 16 if you run into bad weather/road construction/crashes.
With a close eye on Orbitz or another online discount airline service, you'd be better off taking a plane from Medford to L.A.
Salsa,
Re: Your earlier question about housing in Ashland. I was unable to email a response (your address bounced back).
Ashland is more expensive than Medford or the small towns along Hwy 99. You can expect to pay $500-$650. Ashland has a good bus network and the main street was recently rebuilt, so bikes and peds have a safe, wide path through town.
I left for another job, but I still go back to Ashland for business
8-12 times per year. I like the city very much.

Back in '88, I moved from Oceanside, CA to Medford, OR and it is one helluva long drive.... 1-5 can be incredibly dull! The Rogue Valley International/Medford Airport does have a few United Flights that go to and from Los Angeles, but they are very expensive flights...if you can deal with Greyhound, it's not so bad (I've traveled from Phoenix, AZ to Portland on bus)...there's also Amtrak but it goes to Klamath Falls and you have to find a way to get over to Medford (3 hrs away) if you don't want to do their bus. Hope this helps.

It seems to be one of those "flip a coin" situations. To drive will take you ALL day plus some, but you'll see the sights ( hold your nose passing Harris Ranch if you go up I-5) along the way and have your car when you get there
If you fly (and both Alaska, and American Airlines offer non-stop service to Medford) the trip will only take 2 1/4 hours and you will be relaxed and have more time to spend there, but you will have to rent a car.
I can see advantages to either mode of travel. Which would you rather do?

If you've got the time and the stamina, the drive could be nice. It would be at least 11 hours to drive the 675 miles; probably more, since you'd be stopping for gas, food, rest, etc.
Me? I'd take the plane.

Google maps says its 679m and takes 10.5 hours driving directly.
I drove indirectly and stopped in Santa Barbara, San Fransisco and Mendocino and it was one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken. The Redwoods, the Coast, The beautiful North Californian climate - was definitely one of the highlights of my road trip around the states.

The drive was amazing, I don't remember how long it took because I drove the pacific coast highway most of the way. I love that part of the country. Drive it!
