I've heard 48 hours, a week...what is the right answer? This is for weightlifting.

it depends on the load that was used to stimulate the muscle. typically a load of less than 60% of the 1 repetition maximum will not induce microtrauma to skeletal muscle. a muscle could be worked daily using 60% of the 1RM of less. using submaximal loads of 75-85%+ of the 1RM are most used to stimulate hypertrophy. typically the muscle will be fully recovered in 48 hours or less. the CNS actually recovers slower from a high intensity bout of resistance training. this is why training intensity should be cycled to prevent CNS burnout. also heavy eccentric training causes substantially more microtrauma to skeletal muscle than does heavy concentric training.

* along with the diet there are many variables than can ultimately decide optimum recovery times between training sessions

muscle heal very fast, on average 3 to 5 days for just the after-work-out-burn. drink plenty of water and make sure you have enough potassium in your diet. but roughly 3 days. don't wuss out on your work out guy.
