You have to sign at least a two year contract but that depends on the branch and the time you sign some branches will only do a 4 or 6 year contract. Also no mater what branch or how long you sign up for you have an 8 year commitment which has to be for filled one way or another. so it would be the length of your contract of active and the rest in inactive or reserves or guard. The 8 year commitment is not something they will tell you about in till they have you at MEPS and you sign your contract. Also get a guaranteed job that way you know what you are getting into and you do not end up being a ground pounder. There is nothing wrong with that unless you have no interest in it and you wanted to be in a computer job. I saw allot of people who hated the military because they got stuck in a job they had no interest in.

I believe it depends on which branch you're looking at.
I have to ask you, though, a General Enlistment pretty much guarantees infantry or something with minimal schooling/training. Why not commit to another year or two, select an MOS that will get you some training for the future, and use your time in the military to give you a marketable skill for after your enlistment is up?
I'm a military mom and have worked for years with local recruiters and students as they look into enlisting... I ALWAYS recommend AGAINST signing an "open" contract. Get that MOS designation on paper before you make the commitment. In the long run, it's just a better decision to make... even if you choose an infantry MOS!.

You can join for 2,3,4, or 6 years. The more year the more bonus you get if thats what u call it. If you do join, join the airforce and do it for 4 years to get full GI Bill.

You are so lost in the your thinking. First a general is not an enlisted soldier, he/she is an officer. You have to go through OCS, or have to be commissioned from ROTC to be an officer. Second, you rise through the ranks, no one just goes in as a general.
