K-12 is the standard so 13 years. Lots of states are different but when I was in school in California it was k-6 (elementary) then 7-8 (middle school) then 9-12 (high school).

students are not required to take any schooling, but once they are in school, they must stay in until they are 16. then they can take an exam to earn their G.E. instead of finishing high school or going to college.

however, getting a good job would be nearly impossible without a decent high school/college career.

Grades 1-8 and grades 9-12. 12 years or until you get your high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent.
