OBE is a siddhi which is received on the path of Moksha.

it is not moksha in itself nor does it lead to Moksha straightaway.

There are 1000s of people in west, who are not doing any yoga but have OBEs

OBE, if properly done, may help in a way that you may meet some astral rishis who may help you in your progress

also please remember that OBE is not a pre-requisite for Moksha.... there are many who never experienced obe but still took the big leap.

Well, certainly not directly on. Astral projection is used for exploring, learning, healing and finding spiritual guides. As such, it is a step in the process of self development, not the direct path to enlightenment.
It is a tool that you use when you learn, study, meditate and develop yourself. Only in the combination with other methods and a LOT of work you can hope to achieve some sort of an enlightenment.

I really don't think they can. Both of those phenomena are the result of hypnogogic hallucinations. As parts of the brain shut down, sometimes areas responsible for awareness continue to "stay on," causing perceptual changes that sometimes feel like floating, moving about, auditory and visual imagery, etc. The only thing I can think of that would relate to enlightenment would be the disassociation that sometimes occurs.

It's funny to me that people struggle to do this on purpose. This has happened to me occasionally all of my life. In fact, as a child, I was frightened to close my eyes at night to go to sleep because of it. When I started to hear about astral projection, I thought, "Oh, that stuff. People WANT to do that?"
