canadian citizens visiting us for 2 weeks and want to take a 3 or 4 day cruise to Mexico, will they be ok to go and come back to us without a visa to Mexico or to US

A Canadian need not have a visa to visit Mexico for less than six months.

As far as the US is concerned he will not need a visa, typically (unless you have reason to be stopped at the border). However, you may need a passport. I don't THINK you do, I think sea, like land, needs passports next year. However, the cruise line may require it. Go to the US State Dept web page, or the Canadian Consulate web page, it's all there.
