A family history of colon cancer is present in 20% patients and is one of the most important risk factors for colorectal cancer. Specially if the colon cancer is associated with genetic syndromes like FAP or HNPCC. But there are other causes of colon cancer like diet, inflammatory bowel disease etc. So its better to undergo yearly colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy if there is family history of colon cancer in more than one close relative or if the person affected is of a younger age group or if anyone in family has been diagnosed with the genetic syndromes mentioned above.
