Have you changed brands? If so, which do you feel safe with? I have a Himalayin female, and had been feeding her Nutro Naturals...which thank goodness wasn't the particular dates on the list, but I'm still not comfortable giving it to her. I still have the dry food by Nutro. This is all so frustrating, as I thought I was buying one of the best foods for her, and now this! The breeder I got her from feeds her cats raw meat..along with dry food..I've never done that, any advice for that? Thanks for you help!

Thanks so much for all the great advice. Basicaly, thanks for the chicken and rice idea. I can do that! RuneAmok, great info. You have all given great advice and info and I appreciate it so much. This whole ordeal is so frustrating to me!! ( since I found out today that rat poisening is the culprit...or the stuff that makes the poisen,,,hey, no matter, it's still poisen!) I have a case of the nutro naturals with lamb and rice,,,the dates/numbers don't show up on the recall, but I'm still VERY hesitant on giving it to her, even though it is canned and has no gravy. All these answers are so good, not sure if I can just pick ONE!! Thanks! (keep advice, suggestions coming!)

This is a post that I gave to someone else but it appears that you might actually care what I'm telling you. I also used to feed my cats nutro because it was good and lower cost. But it was not the food itself that was bad, it was something in the preservative or something that is not made by the company. but a few things i'm found that my cats love are Solid Gold (ALL OF THESE WILL HAVE TO BE FOUND AND SPECIALTY STORES), Tikki Cat which is awesome because it has real whole fish in it, Merrik, and California natural. But here is the other info. All of the above food is Holistic and all Natural.

Well if you are on a budget you could make the food yourself. Chicken and rice is a good thing to feed your cat. You could get a free range chicken and some organic rice and cook it up use some chicken juice to make a gravy and your cat shouldn't have any problem eating it. You could also go to your local fish guy and ask him for the bone of the fish after he fillets the fish, he shouldn't charge you too much if anything. But if you want to feed your cat dry food there are a bunch of good brands that are between 10-15 dollars that are all natural and REALLY good for your cat. the brands are California Natural, Serengetti, Wellness. but those are just a few, I really recommend the all natural brands because they are so much better for your cat and will save you lots of money in the long run when it comes to the Vet and the health of your cat. But if you can't afford those things and you don't want to make your own food, any wet food is better than crap dry food. because 3/4 of a can of wet food is water and usually has less carbos (which are REALLY bad for your cat because they can't metabolism them)...So i would only feed them food like friskies, whiskers, or things like that for as little time as you have to, but i would try some of the options before, you will have a much happier and healthier cat if you spend a little time preparing it. FYI make sure if you cook the chicken you feed your cat that you take the bones out, if your cat will eat raw chicken you can leave the bones in, it is REALLY good for their teeth! Hope this is helpful!

Nutro isn't a bad food, persay, it's just not higher on the list. I used to feed my cats Nutro Natural Choice, but about a year ago, I switched to Innova dry and sometimes canned. I debated on the canned as cats are obligate carnivores and require higher portions of meat - canned food has better quality proteins. But, they are doing really well on dry, so I only give them canned now and again.

Raw food diet is, according to experts, best for cats as it is as close to what they'd eat in the wild as you can get. However, it can be time consuming, and if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you may not make it correctly. I know at my local pet food store (not a national chain), they have frozen raw food mixtures that you can buy by the pound, but I've never tried it. This store also has higher quality food like Wellness, Innova, California Natural, etc that I can't find anywhere else around here. Maybe if you have a store like that around you, you can find something that works for you.

I feed my cats only dry food. I feed a combination of Nutro Maxx Gourmet Classics and Royal Canin to them. I am not concerned because the companies have said that the food that is tainted is the "wet" food only. My dogs are fed Canidae dry and that is not on the list. So I am not really concerned. The only thing I wish is that they would tell what is actually causing the problem. My guess is that they don't really know right now. Hopefully the food product that is causing the problem is not also contained in the dry pet foods. But so far, it does not seem to be. I have noticed no problems with my cats or dogs. So I am not worried.

My cat is normally on a diet of Wellness brand canned food, but I was at PetSmart a couple of weeks ago and picked up some cans of NutroMax. I also grabbed a bag of dry since he's been snubbing his wet diet and going after the dog's kibble. Well, I'm glad I had the bag of dry because once I found out about the recall, I stopped giving him the canned food....even the dry food is making me nervous. So pretty soon it's back to my regular store for some Wellness. I won't buy any more crap from PetSmart, either. Food-wise, anyway.

Raw feeding is pretty good for cats and dogs, but only if done right. Since store-bought meats can be dangerous to any living thing when raw, it's best to get your meat from a trusted source...and how hard is that these days? We tried the Nature's Variety raw patties, but they're EXPENSIVE and a PAIN to prepare. I have a thing with germs and such, so the whole "raw meat preparation in my kitchen" thing was just gross to me....washing a cutting board every day, having a slab of raw meat thawing, open, in my fridge....just didn't settle well.

I feed my dog Innova Evo dry food, and my cat gets Wellness. My brother recently switched his dogs to Wysong's, and he said it's wonderful and they love it....they make cat food, too.

I feed both cats Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea. Canned. I haven't changed and don't plan to - although I AM considering making a switch to feeding raw.

I do know a good bit about raw diets since I've been researching them. It is the BEST diet for your cat! You should definitely consider it.

Here's a link that can help you get started. There's a lot of excellent information and a recipe.

Also, check out the groups from my 360 page. As part of my research, I've joined several groups that discuss the various methods of raw feeding.

No I havne but only for one reason, I never feed my pets wet food. Honestly its not necessary the dry foods contain all teh nutrients & goodness that is needed to be happy & healthy. They also tend to contain less preservitives & additives as long as you are buying a good quality food. The dry foods are also better for tarter control & keeping teeth clean & healthy. Contrary to popular belief wet food is not a necessity just a preference, most cats & dogs tend to love the way it tastes so people want to give their pets what they love.....but all pets can get COMPLETE nutrition w just dry food
