I would put a stop to your cousin as soon as possible. If you don't like confrontations, you could make up a little white lie and tell your cousin that someone told you that they were sick of your cousins lose lips! That she makes up stories, and doesn't know how to keep her big mouth closed! Plus she is two-faced! If she begs to know who told you, tell her you gave your word not to tell! If your new mother in law asks, tell her it's a friend you met at the store or something, and she doesn't know her! Bottom line is, your cousin will get the hint either way!!

Keep the cousin out of your business and confront her. Don't have her over to your house, and go talk with your MIL if you have too.

This is dirty pool, and you don't need someone to cause a calamity in your life.

Take charge and be the man and stand tall and get what is going on in the open. Once you flush the little mouth out into the light, he/she will chill out and she will lose her integrity and be known as a gossiper.

Your cousin is your own flesh and blood, and it would be a million times easier to stop her than to stop your MIL from taking away the bad impression of you if your cousins continues.

Confront your cousin with your mum/sister or something, and tell her to either STAY OUT of your life, or stop misbehaving if she wants to remain in it.

If that doesn't work out, do damage control with your MIL by explaining to her why this cousin is always saying nasty things.
