I've tried burning with 2x DVD-RWs, but they didn't seem to be compatible with my burner. Would I encounter the same problem if using 16x DVD-Rs?

I think if you read the paper work of the device you are doing the burning with, it may have suggestions for which manuafactures make machines that play dvd's burn on your unit the best. I have that same problem when I burn dvd's and I have 3 different makes in my home. Sometimes when one won't play it, the other will.

The problem with your situation is that You dont know what software is in the DVD player you want to buy. I have a top of the line DVR-DVD BURNER, And half of the time the movies I burn wont play in other peoples players, They work fine in mine, I recommend taking a disk to the store with and ask to play it on a display model to make sure they are compatible. Allot of people do this before they buy DVD players today, Unfortunately their are so many brands out there you cant be sure if they all match up with the software.

Older DVD players will do that more often then newer ones, perhaps it's just time for an upgrade. otherwise, you could try buying a different brand of DVD's and see what works ..go for the -Rs maybe?
