JOHANNA,

HERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTINS;
Wisdom teeth are third molars that usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24 (although they may appear when older, younger, or may not appear at all). They are commonly extracted when they affect other teeth—this impaction is colloquially known as "coming in sideways." [1] It is possible that wisdom teeth were useful when it was common for humans to lose several teeth to decay by the age when they appear.[1] Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it is possible to have more or fewer. Absence of one or more wisdom teeth is an example of hypodontia. Any extra teeth are referred to as supernumerary

Wisdom teeth erupt roughly between the ages of 18-25. But as with anything in our bodies there are no hard and fast rules, i have known children as young as 14 getting wisdom teeth and adults as old as 40 getting wisdom teeth although this is unusual.
Just to make sure you keep the areas were the wisdom teeth are coming through clean as you can get nasty infections.

they're called "wisdom" teeth because they come in when a person is older and "wiser" 22 is perfectly normal

You should have an x-ray of the wisom teeth. Mine did start to come in when I was 15, but an exray showed they were all messed up. All 4 had to be dug out. I was awake through the procedure, but higher than a kite (Valium, I think).

MOST people's wisdom teeth have to be extracted because there is not room, or they are positioned wrong (couple of mine were completely on their side!). You should get the xray. Call your dentist.

I refuse to have any dentist touch my wisdom teeth, they are there for a reason. So that when I am toothless, I will still have 4 more LOL In any case, that is just an opinion. It sounds like you probably have a swollen wound most likely. Vicodin will help you keep the pain off but it will not help with the swell. It is swollen because somehow it has gotten some bacteria or got exposed. The dentist will usually put something to lower the swelling and then most likely some penicillin or similar medicine. If it is very bad and you have insurance, you might want to visit the hospital to see if they can inject you for the swelling or bacteria. Good Luck!

it's normal. some get them later than others. some never get them at all. have the dentist check them to make sure they are coming in right, if you haven't already.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt. This occurs usually between the ages of 17 and 25. There remains a great deal of controversy regarding whether or not these teeth need to be removed. It is generally suggested that teeth that remain completely buried or un-erupted in a normal position are unlikely to cause harm. However, if these impacted teeth are in an abnormal position (a dentist can show you this on an x-ray), their potential for harm should be assessed.

I got mine out when I was 22 and I was reassured by my dentist that is perfectly normal. They do get tender as they come in and you'll want to have them looked at soon by a dentist to be certain there are no problems. You'll need x-rays.

A friend of mine had hers partially present in the gums and they rotted, requiring a painful surgery as well as medications to heal her. Mine were fully impacted, the surgery was painful (the recovery moreso), but the worst of it was over in 2 weeks. It isn't so bad if you can avoid dry socket! (and if you're not allergic to all the GOOD pain meds like I am ;)

Some people's mouths can handle the extra teeth and they never need to be pulled. Others need to have them extracted or they cause problems. Others yet don't EVER get wisdom teeth (case in point, my husband). The rest of us can growl at them as we think back on the "joyous" experience of having ours pulled!

Get yourself looked at and good luck!

I'm 22 also and I've had wisdom tooth problems for about 4 years now. They still haven't grown in, and they can really hurt sometimes. So it's probably not that odd.

Your wisdom teeth might come in late, so what. Mine came in late, I chewed an extra pack of gum. They itched more than hurt. Everybody will tell you to get them pulled. That's the standard; but do you really need that?

It is normal what you are experiencing. Mine came in around 20 or 22. The pain would come and go untill the actual tooth was completely grown out. It can be painful. If they really bother you, you may want to consider getting them pulled out. You'll be fine, dont worry.
