My doctor prescribed Retin-A for acne on my face, and I have been using it for years with no problems. However, I started getting acne on my back within the past few weeks, so I started putting Retin-A gel on my back. My back has been getting very itchy in the past few days, and today I noticed a big red rash on my back where I had put the cream.

Is this normal? will the rash go away soon? should i keep using the Retin-A gel on my back and see if the rash goes away?

Stop using it on your back. You may have developed an allegic reaction to the Retin-A. If it doesn't get better after a few days, it might be better for you to go and see your dermatologist and see what she has to say. OR the Retin-A gel might have been too harsh on your skin, you may want to consider switching to the cream form Retin-A instead. Ask your derm.

I hate Retin-A gel. I used the Retin-A micro and it almost destroyed my skin. I have a condition called keratosis pilaris. It was prescribed for me, but that stuff created a red rash and my face sort of scabbed over. I just treat my condition by lotions and it's fine.

Sounds to me like you've done pretty much what can be done for now. You said you saw the doctor about 3 wks ago. Would that have been a dermatologist? That is who you need to see. Otherwise, I can only suggest you buy a good moisturizer body lotion that you like and use it liberally, especially on your arms and legs and try not to scratch. Dry skin will only aggravate an already troublesome condition. Try not to worry on it too much or your nerves will kick in and make matters worse.. Continue the antihistamines. They won't hurt you and hopefully you are taking one of the newer ones that do not make you sleepy. Good luck.. I am an RN
