Statistically, about half the time based on numbers I've seen.

The actual recidivism numbers vary by the crime, and the jurisdiction, and a number of other situational factors.

In some cases it does but I think a lot of the time the justice system and the prison system does not take into consideration the fact that some criminals (child molesters for example) commit crimes because they suffer mental illness and psychological disorders. Those types of offenders can not be trusted to just serve their time and then return to the streets. In short I believe psychological evaluation should me mandatory upon entering and leaving the prison system. If the evaluation shows negative results, the government needs to find an alternative to just allowing them back on the streets to kill, rob, or rape again.

That will never happen though. Too many bleeding hearts would find that offensive.

I personally have been to prison and believe me we NEVER had steak or lobster. I didnt even have a pillow. The worst part about being locked up is the waiting. You do nothing but wait all day in your 6X8 with two other guys. There are no weight rooms or colleges we had a common area 2 hours a day. We didnt even get to go outside. There is no reforming unless you just dont want to go back to the concrete waiting room.

Prison is not for reform, it's for punishment. And despite the urban legend, a lot of people do get reformed in prison. The rest are life-time criminals who will always be committing crimes no matter what you do.

The same goes for the death penalty: It's main function is punishment, not deterrence.

;you are right there....prison is like being on vacation. If you sneeze they take you to the doctor, they eat steak and lobster, they can get there schooling and college, dental is all taken care of, you name it they get it. They don't have to reform they have it made. Its us poor slob who struggle to make a living and keep our heads a float that suffer. don't always have the money for school or dental when needed and when we do we pay thru the nose. And for dinner it is budgeted. So lets just pamper them more so when they get out they can rape and kill all over again.

No it does not, prison only "warehouses" them, most leave with a better grasp on criminality.
