I bought this vehicle used, and i had a reese hitch put on. I dont think that it has a towing package on it. What does it cost to have a towing package put on?

i have the same year jeep and i am pulling a work trailer that is in the 5000lb range everyday. my jeep did have the hitch on from the factory, but it doesnt say in the specs that it has a towing package and i dont see any additional oil or tranny coolers on it, just keep the overdrive turned off everytime you pull.

Can you get a copy of the owners manual? It will list towing capacities in it. You can also call Jeeps customer assistance line and they will find out for you. Any Jeep dealer will have the number. A "towing package" is something installed at the time of manufacture of a vehicle and is not easily added at any price. It usually consists of: a weight distributing receiver hitch, wiring for lights, battery charging, and a brake control (but not the brake control itself, just the wiring for it) a heavier duty alternator, heavier duty radiator, sometimes separate transmission and engine oil coolers, a lower differential gear ratio, heavier suspension and on and on! Is your Jeep 4 wheel or two wheel drive? How often will you tow the trailer? How far? Under what conditions: Hot summer driving? Up and over alot of hills? Off road? Is the 4241 lbs empty or loaded?
Empty I would say you are close to the Jeeps towing capacity if it is properly equipped. If it weighs alot more when loaded I would say it is too heavy for a Jeep with a 6 cylinder unless you are only going to tow for short distances and it is towed under ideal conditions (cool weather on flat terrain) You can get the needed wiring and brake control installed for around $200. You will still need the weight distributing hitch (the part that slides into the receiver hitch on the back of the Jeep) . They are not cheap and you should not try to cut corners on it as it involves your safety and everyone elses on the road.
I would also strongly recommend a sway control in addition to the weight distributing hitch. A sway control can save you life!

Don't do it! Rent a real truck! Ps. A towing package is not something you just put on like a hat.

On the bright side, it's good you have the six, the 4.7s just drop unexpectedly like birds**t!

Anything over 2000 lbs dry weight will require a towing package(trans cooler, electronic brake control, etc).Best left to professional instal.
