My daughter has a friend who has come down with Mono. Can someone tell me about this disease? I know very little about it and am worried if my daughter may have come in contact with it.
All serious answers are appreciated.

Mono is also known as the "kissing disease". You can get it from drinking from the same glass or cup of a person that has it. It affects the glands and requires bed rest. It affects the throat which also gets very sore. Sometimes the glands in the neck swell so bad that the person has to be hospitalized for breathing problems. While in the hospital they are given antibiotics intraveniously until the infection subsides.

If a person with mono (which can be detected by drawing blood) does not stay home, rest, eat properly and take care of themselves--it can lead to more serious conditions--affecting the liver.

It is contageous, and is known as 'the kissing disease'. All of my friends got it when we were 16--and I didn't get it until I was 19--when no one else had it.

Some symptoms include swollen glands, extreme fatigue, fever, etc. Some people only need to be home for around 4 weeks. Other cases have been extreme enough to require hospitalization for a good deal of time.

mono is usually transmitted orally through saliva which is why it is often referred to as the 'kissing disease". so if your daughter had drunk from the same cup as her friend or shared a straw, something like that, then she could have picked it up. but if she was just playing with her friend then it is highly unlikely.
