I am booking our Maui honeymoon but cant decide if it would be better to stay in a cottage close to Hana in a more secluded area or to stay in a place close to Lahaina and Kaanapli? What would you recommend? Would staying in the cottage close to Hana keep us from the main attractions and beaches of Maui??? Please HELP!!!!!!

I grew up on Maui, but honestly that doesn't qualify me as a travel expert.

I do know that you can find the best lodging deals at http://www.maui.net

This website is run locally on Maui. You will find more hotel choices than any other place, and yes you can stay on the ocean for less than $100.00 per night.

Lahaina is the tourist zone, and probably the best nightlife and restaurants. Hana is a little remote, at least 6 hours drive to get to any other place. I would recommend staying someplace in between, but I don't think you can go wrong no matter what you choose on Maui.

I love Maui. I have been 3 times, and even got married down by the Maui Prince. I would say do not stay in Hana in September. That is the start of the rainy season and you may see more clouds than anything else at that time. Unless you are mostly thinking about going up into the crater, or doing a lot of hiking and want seclusion, then go to the western side.
South Maui (Kihei) is a bit more laid back but also a bit more budget conscious. There are lots of condo properties, but most are not directly on the beach. If you go north then you hit Lahaina, which is more of the nightlife and shopping and stuff like that. Kaanapali is next and that is where the big resorts are. They are pretty spendy, and the ones that aren't pricy aren't really that nice. Kahana might be a good option just north of Kaanapali. There are condos on the beach and good snorkeling right off the beach. Plus your still only about 10 to 15 minutes from Lahaina. I wouldn't stretch too much farther north although my favorite hotel is the Ritz because it is just beautiful and they really have respected the natives (they were going to build right at the water until they found a native burial site and moved the hotel back a football field stretch from it and surrounded it with bushes to keep people from tracking through) the wind can be pretty intense in the winter.

BTW don't take a snorkel tour, rent snorkel equipment from one of the shops and ask them for a good spot to snorkel near your hotel. Some of the coolest fish can be found a stones throw from the beach. Stay away from Molokini Crater for snorkeling, it's crowded with hand fed fish that you can see right in front of your hotel. I saw 3 turtles as wide as my dinner table snorkeling right in front of the Aston Kaanapali Shores. They like the area and hang out pretty much in the area.

I have been to Maui five times. Hana is fun but really isolated. Long difficult ride through gorgeous scenery. Ok if you want but not much in the way places to eat or shop.

The West Coast as you seem to know is where the big Hotels are. Divide that into North and South. To the North is Lahaina and Kaanapalii. To the South is Kihei and Wailea.

You basically have two choices, hotel room or condo. The hotels are much alike. Beautiful grounds and beautiful inside rooms.

I prefer the condo route. There are lots of them. I also prefer Kihei. Not quite as crowded as up to the North. My favorite condo is the Hale Pau Hana (House of No Work). Seven stories with elevator. All condo face the water. They have what amounts to a private beach. In front of the hotel and above the beach is the swimming pool and private lawn. I always get a condo on the 4th floor or higher as then there is an onobstructed view of the whales and the sunsets. Not terribly expensive and you can make your own coffee and eat on the lanai. Close by are the big hotels with their entertainment and restaurants..

Aloha

I have't been to Maui in 2 years but I would say stay closer to the attractions and do the 'road to hana' trip on one of your days. The road to hana drive is fun and you can stop at different spots and take pictures. the road is a windy path with lots of bridges to cross but its all worth it when you get to the black sand beach along the way. Maui isnt as busy as the other islands so you dont have to worry about being overwhelmed with tons of people like on the big Island. Maui is more laid back and romantic. Enjoy!

If you're on a budget I would recommend the Outrigger Aina Nalu. It is in Lahaina and a short walk to resteraunts, shops, and the little nightlife that is in Maui. If you're budget is a little higher, go for the Grand Wailea or Westin. Hana is a tough long drive and worth it. Do go to a pineapple plantation. Fresh picked pineapple is soooooo good.
