I love Thomas Merton. He is my favorite of the 20th century. He was a mystic. Read the Epilogue to the Sign of Jonah. So moving. It is called the Fire Watch. And it is not just about watching for fire in the monastery when it is under construction. It is about a mystical experience. It is such an intimate time between Merton and God at the end that we should not even be listening.

I often quote him from "No Man is an Island" when he speaks of silence.

I was so blessed to visit his monastery the first week of lent this year. I saw his grave. I was there for 4 days and found some of his tapes where he was teaching the novices. I had never heard his voice before. That was so great! Feel free to e-mail if you have an specific questions.
