My husband is currently in Iraq, well, just getting there. His unit gave us the address and now his unit is done inprocessing and moving to the FOB and is just being told that they will be getting a unit number for the mailing address.

SO...what will happen to the letters i have sent him so far that is without his mailing address? Here is what i have so far:

Name
unit name
name of FOB
apo ae #####

will the letters get to him or come back to me without the unit #?

With the unit name and FOB name it should get there. Definitely start using the unit number once you get it, but we never even got a unit number for my husband's last deployment, so it should still get there.

If it doesn't, the mail will either chase them around the country the entire deployment or eventually get sent back to you (months later). During my husband's last deployment, they moved FOBs - the mail chased them for a while, then some of it came back to me. Most of it is still lost out there in the desert somewhere. Just make sure that if you ever send anything valuable, you get it insured!

I am currently working in the middle east with the military and as long as the information is somewhat close to where he is it will reach him. It may not be in the most timely fashion but it will get to him. You would not believe some of the mail that gets delivered with the addresses that people put on them. I will definetly give it to the post office for their determination on delivering packages to the troops.

The US military try’s very hard to make sure each troop gets their mail .. Even if they have changed camps … it may take a little longer but I would be willing to bet that he will get them all .. I myself have messed addresses up and they still receive the letters …

They catch up to them! They military has always tried its best to deliver the mail as they know how important it is for the troops! Wish they could find a way to get rid of Dear John letters!

it may take a bit longer to find him, but the letters will make it him. worst case senario, they can direct the letters to the unit and the unit can forward the mail directly to his F.O.B.

the MPS is pretty good about getting it there.
