Why does the debate on evolution continue? We know evolution is a fact. Why do Atheiest say Christians do not believe in it? Why do Christians try to say it doesn't exist?
Everybody does realize that the 12 largest Christian denominations (at least in the US)United Methodist Church, National Baptist Convention, USA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church (USA), National Baptist Convention of America, African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church, all claim almost 80% who support evolution. Catholic Doctrine offically supports evolution, Presybterian doctrine does as well. Methodists and Episcopals have no official stance on evolution but promote it. Lutherans and National Baptist Convention say you can be a Christian and support evolution.
So why continue this debate?

The people talking about school, I for one went to Catholic School for my entire elementary and secondary school. We were taught evolution in science class and creationism as our cultural metaphor for the creative power of God in religion class.
We learned both, but we only learned one was a fact and based on evidence.

Bravo! Well said.
Unfortunately, some very vocal creationists are doing a very good job of putting out enough propaganda that there are still a significant number of Christians who believe the propaganda.

1. Because some people do not like the idea of accomodating scripture and its interpretation around scientific findings.
2. Its not "Atheists" who are saying this. Its morons on both sides who are saying this.
Evolution and Christianity can coexist, because Evolution is a Scientific theory, and science can coexist with Christianity via use of Natural Theology.
EDIT Martin C: Just a belief in Creationism doesn't bother most people, but trying to push Creationism into state education does bother most people.
The key here is that Creationism has no scientific basis. There's no standing in the scientific community for Creationism because the evidence simply does not fit.

Because the truth is that Christians are ignorant about modern science. Look at that one guy (J.R.) saying that their "theory" of creationism should be taught alongside darwinian evolution. He makes ignorant assertments like "real scientists don't say it's a fact" or "there are no transitional fossils. The ones that exist have been proven hoaxes" when neither of those statements are true. If someone refuses to stop being ignorant, there is nothing more to say. Worse part is they indoctrinate kids with their lies, so the debate continues thanks for that horrible meme.

the controversy keeps because of the fact evolutionists refuse to allow pass of their priceless philosophy. a million. How has evolution been shown? Minor changes and immunities are no longer evidence of something. 2. Evolution isn't technology. it incredibly is a philosophy. Evolution isn't in basic terms unscientific, it is likewise anti-medical.

Because foolish people still believe that they descended from apes. They have a right to believe this, but I am offended when they call this belief science.
By the way, your numbers are off. Belief in evolution is about 50% in the US. And that is after decades of evolution being our official state religion, promoted in the schools as "science".

While Evolution Science makes no specific claim about any deity, Genesis 1:25 makes those Christians incorrect, as it removes the possibility of macroevolution. So evolution being true (which I believe) makes at least that passage in the Bible false.

As long as there are cretins willing to believe in fables as truth, this debate will continue. It is actually a debate between truth and ignorance. Where someone looks at a text that is over 2500 years as a source of information, they are lost anyway. Imagine applying biblical principles in medicine, you would be holding ceremonies and laying ointment and ............guess I just described a Pentecostal meeting........

Because the fundementalists still believe in it, the atheists point it out as a major flaw in the Bible, and it makes for such great arguements.

Really, "we" all know we evolved from a pack rat, just look at most people's houses.
But, you err in thinking the "we", that why people debate. Heck, even Christians debate the Bible. And Evolutionists debate evolution.
It the "Thrill of the chase"!
