I heard on the news just now that stap infection cases are spreading. People at work are complaining about weird sores on their body and I'm getting some too. I live in the Silicon Valley.

What the heck is going on? I'm not joking. I'm serious.

"Weird sores" does not equal staph. Staphyloccus bacteria are *everywhere* and don't necessarily cause disease. The diseases they *do" cause vary from minor to major.

I got weird sores all over my body when I was a college student living in a dorm. Turned out to be bedbugs, courtesy of the campus linen service. Icky, but not serious.

Hospitals have a problem with staph because patients are already seriously ill and susceptible to infection, other patients harbor the bacteria, and people have wounds, needles, and tubes in their bodies that are like welcome mats to microbes.

Because antibiotics are used--or overused--so frequently, germs have developed antibiotic resistance. This makes it that much more difficult to control infections.

As far as food poisoning by E. coli is concerned--it gets into food by contamination with animal feces, often in the water supply. Poisonings affect more people because farms are larger and production is centralized--produce from a single farm is shipped across the country to many outlets. Furthermore, there is very little effective regulation on the federal level to prevent this.

The reason staph infections exist is as humans we have slow let our standards of living go by the way side. At one time we had high standards for health and healthcare, even high sanitary standards.
One question: How many people do you notice in a public bathroom that wash their hands after using the restroom? Now think of that person as your Nurse, Doctor, Waiter at your favorite resturant, the person you just met and shook hands with, or the last person to touch the door knob on the way of the bathroom.
Let's face it we have become a dirty society, look at the outbreaks of e-coli in food, this never used to happen. E-coli is the germ in feces. How does it get into Celery, Carrots, and other foods.
I challenge you the next time you are in a public restroom watch people and see if they wash their hands afterwards.

Yes, staph infections have become a major concern for hospitals. There is germ warfare going on there. Just because people have sores doesn't mean that they have staph infections. If they have staph, it's contagious to you and others. So encourage them to go get checked by their doctors or the Company physician.

It's call mother nature. Germs and viruses have been in this planet much more before us, "each year some 500,000 patients in American hospitals contract a staphylococcal infection". So don't be paranoic there is no conspiracy.
