I don't know what you mean by blood check?
Do you mean when they test your type?

Giving blood they stick you in the inner part of your elbow and basically let it drain out of you into a bag. As it drains they take some vials of it for the testing. Usually you are lieing on a bed with something to squeeze to keep it flowing.
If you are giving blood do yourself a favor and drink lots of water the few days leading up to and including the day you go. It make the process go so much faster.

The collection for both call for the insertion of a needle into the vein.

When donating blood it is collected in a bag that is measured as a Unit. They run some test on each sample to make sure that it does not contain disease prior to giving it to a patient.

The collection of blood for diagnostic test is placed into different tubes that may contain a clear solution that will help preserve the blood for the initial test and any additional test the physician might want to order later.

Essentially the same - they can use different needles, but it comes down to the preference of who ever is doing the medical supply ordering for the place.
