Vets carry Advantage.
I use Revolution (also from a vet) and it is a stripe-on-the back all-in-one medicine that kills fleas, heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, and ear mites.

Advantage does not fight off tapeworm, it prevents fleas, which do carry tapeworm eggs, but it won't do anything to kill tapeworms if your dog/cat already has them. It's prescription so you have to get it from the vet. Cats also get tapes from hunting, so it would be a good idea to give Drontal twice a year to kill any tapeworms in the cat-also get that from the vet.

Advantage won't kill a tapeworm, it will only take care of fleas which can give animals tapeworms. Your best bet is to take the cat to the vet for a shot (cost me $20), THEN put the cat on a topical parasiticide. I use Revolution on both my cat and dog, and it's been working great.

Don't use OTC worming medications as they are often completely ineffective and can cause discomfort.

Are you UK or USA based?

Here in the UK I had to take my kitten to the vets as she had tapeworm (infected flea). Vet gave me 1 tablet to be split in half and put in food - one half now, the other in 2 weeks time. Kitty is now fine. I have now purchased Drontal tabs online - 12 tabs (3 years) one to be given every 3 months. It cost me £19.08 no p+p delivery within 48 hours. Would probably cost that amount for just one tablet from the vet!!

Purchase Frontline (and Combo -prescription from the vet) from this same website, at a fraction of the cost the vet would charge.

UK - VetUK check it out - best there is!!

It's a preventative for tapeworms, not a treatment. If you need to treat worms, try profender, it's a new spot on worm treatment then move to advantage. Advocate is more effective than advantage, as it deals with preventing more worm types.

PetSmart carries three tablets of tapeworm meds for about $25.

tapeworm needs a special med, oral. my vet charges $15 per cat for it. be sure you see "rice" around the "rear", anus, before you self diginos. a vet swabs the rectum and tests for the parasite.
