Perhaps it was the golden spires that lured them. They vied among themselves to capture this or that great city, especially the richest prize of all, Moscow.

The only way to win at that time was to push right over and not waste a second or the window of opportunity would close and the last thing the German Generals wanted was to have another situation like Napoleon. It did, anyways, and the Russians were able to counterstrike under conditions the Germans feared most. Stalwart around Moscow in the freezing cold of winter.

Moscow and the surrounding area were the industrial centre of the Soviet Union, if the could have capture that region, the could have cut off all Soviet weapons and equipment production.
But Hitler thought it would be better to deliver the Soviets a morale blow by capturing the Stalingrad, the city named after their President. However, the Soviets were able to baugh down the Nazis in Stalingrad until the could mass enough strength to launch a counter attack in the city, and then launch the battle of Kursk (which was the turning point of the war).

That is easy: Hitler desired to have the world in its hands. Being the Soviet Union an enormous nation, would be enough to control the country to have a good portion of the world-wide territory under control (you already it repaired in the size of the former USSR in the map?) and more than 80% of the Europe with the flag of the Reich. Hitler imagined that, taking Moscow, center of the power and economy, all the USSR would pass little by little to its hands.

Moscow is among the biggest cities in the world. Is really a city that has grown rapidly in new decades, and, consequently, comprises high-rise suburbs bordering a comparatively compact ancient heart with plenty of exciting old architecture. The main host to Moscow may be the Red Square that has been for centuries, the center and soul of Russia. Here, you can look at the Century St. Basil's Cathedral, one of the very famous items of architecture on earth and the constructivist chart of Lenin's Mausoleum. Red Square is definitely a rich place in icons of Russia's turbulent and exciting past.

Moscow is the capital of the former soviet union and the seat of power of its leaders. Cut off the head, it can't think. Hitler took too many detours which helped the soviet people tremendously.

They didn't. the boss did. The thinking {Hitler's} was to avoid getting bogged down by the long Russian winter as Napoleon did, with no way to resupply. And sure enough.............
