my friend tells me it wont get smaller/weaker, but im pretty sure i heard that if you overwork a muscle it will get weaker.

nah...the level of intensity should dictate the frequency of training a body part

although that type of training is neither optimum for strength or hypertrophy as there is too much time between training sessions

depends if your talking about a heavy workout on that muscle, or a light workout, if you train a muscle on a maximum weight load then you need to rest that muscle every second day and it will grow bigger with more strength, a light workout could be done every day which would most likely maintain size and strength. there are lots of other factors to take into account in your question to make it more specific.

when you begin to work out the muscle it will shrink in size and begin to be more powerful. if you are skinny to begin with you'll become slimmer for a time. when the muscle has developed enough and you start to introduce new tissue it will increase in size and strength.

Yes. If you train it everyday, it will not have time to recover and repair. It will get weaker every day and you will risk severe injury to it.

Working a muscle group every day won't make it smaller.
It may actually be the opposite.
Take for example cyclists who ride every day, or gymnasts; they have bulky muscles.
