Turn the light on and read for awhile, go to the kitchen and find a snack (something filling), get out a pen and paper and write down all the things that made me feel happy that day, write a letter to a friend I've beep putting off, paint my toes, a glass of wine, etc.

Warm milk doesn't taste awful if you put honey in it, or a flavored coffee creamer like Hazelnut. If you do the milk thing, crawl right back in bed immediately, read or watch tv for no longer than 5-10 minutes before flipping the light off and closing your eyes. Notice how comfortable the bed feels or your pillow and allow yourself to feel cozy and 'ahh'. That part is psychological but your brain/body will buy into it if you focus on it for a bit. Warm milk's sleepy stuff triptophen does not last very long but most times works like a charm. If you stay up too long though, the effect will wear off you won't notice, it's subtle.

If that doesn't work, try to stay awake! Lay there in bed in the dark and tell yourself you HAVE to keep your eyes open and you have to stay awake. Reverse psychology works. After a bit your eyes will want to close and feel sleepy, fight it until you're literally almost asleep. I'm sure if the light were on you'd look pretty funny doing this though...lol

I get up out of bed and walk around my house. I try to break the cycle of going back to sleep for 5 minutes and then awake again. Sometimes I will read for a 1/2 hour or so. If I can't sleep I'm not losing any sleep by reading. Thinking about what was keeping me awake and then putting it aside with the idea of dealing with it tomorrow , also helps.

Why is it that you cant sleep? Ask yourself these questions and see if you can help yourself before going to a doctor. I have tired tylenol pm and it works for those nights I just cant sleep. Also try herbal teas with Chamomile, this soothes and gives a very calming effect. Hot baths with Lavender is another idea. There are a number of things that could be bothering your sleep. This why it would important to consult in your doctor if all else fails. Your doctor will be able to sit down with you and discuss possible options for you.
