tomorrow there is a team tennis torunament and only six players can play. One of the players is ranked higher than me in the section, but I beat him twice (6-0,a week ago, then 6-3 four days ago). I even beat the kids he lost to(but that shouldn't matter). The coach says that since the kid(9th grade) is ranked higherand "grinds till the end", he gets to play instead of me. This doesn't seem fair, but are far as the ranking is concerned, I can see where the coach is coming from. However, he isn't applying this rule to everyone. One of the players is not ranked at all, but he gets to play because he is better than most of the kids. That is understandable considering that he won the state doubles championship. But in my situation, the coach is using the ranking rule against me even though I have clearly proven that I should play. I always treat the coach and my teammates with respect and I never had problems before.

Then approach your coach with your concerns and let them know how you feel.

Just because you beat the outranked player twice, you've got to remember them being higher in rankings means they've beaten more people than you have, so that's why he's got the spot.

The other player also has a solid history...unfortunately, what you're experience is the literal version of the saying "working your way up the ranks".

It isn't fair, and neither is much of anything else. If you go back to the coach now, you'll only make things worse for yourself. Put it down as a learning experience: Life is not fair.

Approach your coach but not in a way that seems like you disagree with him, just ask him to re-explain the rules on how he picks who plays. If he brings up the ranks then politely enquire as to why so-and-so who isn't ranked gets to play? Just make sure you're not argumentative about it or you will be shooting yourself in the foot.

I'm sorry you can't play... but since it seems you are a better player, I'm sure you can pass him in rank. It does sorta suck that the other guy can play, but then he does have that *official* win going for him... Keep playing and you'll solve the problem for the next tournament!
