I am graduating from college, and I need some ideas as to what to do immediately following the ceremony. I know that dinner should be involved, but I have a big family. Is it cheesy to ask people to pay their own way after the dinner?

To celebrate, maybe you should send out invites to your dinner stating where and at what time dinner is, that way when they arrive it will be like any other time you would visit a restaurant, and when they order, the waiter will ask how they want to split the check, so they will be aware that they are paying for their own meal. Or another thing you could do is to call a catering company and have them set up at your house or a place to hold your celebration.

You can't ask them to pay AFTER dinner if they didn't know they were expected to pay BEFORE...

Are you sure THAT many people would be interested in sitting through a grad ceremony? Boring...omg boring... those that do, deserve to be fed.. and lots of liquor too :)

I wouldn't do a restaurant... this is a family party.. do it family style! It'll be late spring or summer, so a cold spread would be fine. Get a lot of fresh breads & buns, sliced meat & cheese, a big cake... and I'll bet all the aunties will be happy to bring a salad or fruit or veggie platter.

Congratulations on your graduation :)

Worse than cheesy. Have a get together of family with pot luck buffet, don't try to do something fancy that you cannot afford (that would definitely be bad taste). Let Mama, the aunts, sisters and friends bring the food. Celebrate like you do at Christmas.

I think it's absolutely understandable and acceptable to drop your obligation of payment after the dinner...honestly...if it's a party in YOUR honor, then they should be paying YOUR way, not the other way around.
