I keeping hearing how pulling out is a "recipe for defeat" or an "invitiation fo Al Qaeda". Does anyone know what the plan for victory other than this latest troop surge is? I haven't really noticed any change in strategy. Did I miss something? What are we doing to get out of Iraq?

And please, no partisan bickering about how Bush is a warmongerer and the Democrats are weak and Al Qaeda sympathizers, we've all heard it already.

As far as I can tell, the plan for victory is to have enough troops over there to maintain status quo or at least hold off complete defeat until enough Iraqi soldiers are enlisted, trained and put to duty (which will be hard to do as long as half of them desert and a fourth of them go to the other side) long enough for us to get out and then let THEM worry about civil war

The U.S. troops are there as a stop gap while the Iraqi forces will be trained. That date set by the president of Iraq is June 2007 when he believes the iraqi forces can take over all of Iraq.

If the surge works, Secretary of defense said the troops could leave by fall or winter of this year. The democrats want to withdrawl in the spring of next year regardless if anything works.

Chances are the U.S. forces will start to leave Iraq in January 2009 if Bush tries his best to keep the troops in Iraq. This doesn't mean much to the U.S. forces. After all, there is still a shortage of troops in Afganistan according to the NATO commander. The Democrats have their eyes on Somalia (as part of a peace keeping force) and Sudan as an offensive force.

The plan for victory is simple in it's formulation, and difficult in it's execution. This is war after all.

The stabilization of ALL districts, with an agreement by all parties governed by the rule of law, and the capacity to execute the rule of the agreed upon law is the objective.

No one wants to take away any faction's right to assert itself, UNLESS, that particular faction breaks the law and causes civil unrest, death and destruction, and invokes a religious dominance over others that are protected by the Iraqi constitution.

In other words, the Iraqi's who have voted for and approved a constitution, should have the ability to self govern, and enforce their constitution against all and any aggressors.

Once we have enabled them to achieve this balance, we will then help them monitor their success with the full force and military might of the United States of America.

Just like we did in western europe.

Wake up and smell the jihad.

Let our troops fight without tying their hands, such as the Iraqi government not allowing them into certain places in Baghdad.

The simplest solution is, let us fight where ever the fight takes us or we are gone!

I know, I am a Viet Nam Vet. We could have won that war in months if they would have let us.

Also, there was a big change of strategy.

The Iraqi PM has finally opened up all Baghdad to our troops and the insurgency is now doing less. Villagers are now fighting and killing alQaeda operatives

no I dont think that there is a real workable plan to win the war on terror. So far all the us have accomplished is to free afghanistan and get into the **** in Iraq. No one would be happier than me if the war on terror could be a success and the terrorism is over. But how to do that is a million dollar question. Johan

The plan for victory is to never give up. The cold war... we won that by simply out-spending our enemy.

We declare that we're done. That's victory.

Since we have no other goal or agenda, we can draw the finish line wherever we want. We're the only ones defining our goals, so we can declare we've accomplished them at any point.

It's like a contest where you have to run a race, but you're the only one running it, and you get to draw the finish line wherever you want. "Winning" is whatever you define it to be.
