I have a 1 year old male Papillon and I just cant get him to focus. He seems more interested in everything else than the food. I have really good treats, but he likes other dogs more. Any ideas?

Maybe you could try using treats and a clicker. The clicker tells the dog if he's doing something right. Another thing you might do is make a certain noise you don't usually make, like clicking with your tongue, and get him to understand that that means you need him to focus. Also, try starting training him in a quiet room with not many interesting objects about, and that might calm him. Good luck with training!

Is he neutered? if not, that will help. Also, feed him less of his regular food so that he's more motivated by your treats. Then move or get his attention and when he's looking at you, say your command and give him a treat (i use the command 'watch me'). That means that the dog is already doing the behavior before you say the command (you are labeling the behavior). When you reward, be happy about it - celebrate.
Keep doing this until you can say the command and if you need to make a movement so you remind him that his eyes should be on you, then reward. Keep this up and pretty soon, when you give the command, your dog will look right at you. Reward this and then keep eye contact with the dog and ask for very slightly longer and longer eye contact with the dog. Soon your dog will give you all his attention for as long as you want it.

Some dogs are simply not food motivated. Is he toy obsessed? Sometimes you can use toys as rewards. I have a dog who would rather play ball than eat food, so I will work on things with her while playing ball. I make her do whatever thing I'm working on before I will throw the ball. It works. The reward doesn't always have to be food.

Most dogs will pay attention to other animals around them more than other things...it's territorial behavior. Try to train the dog in a room without other animals and as few distractions as possible. You may also have to experiment with different treats than the ones you have. Even if your other animals love them it doesn't mean it'll work for your dog.

Maybe he doesn't LIKE your "really good treats".
What are you using?
Try liverwurst, most of them like that........ or just experiment with different treats until you find something he really likes. Papillons are kind of finicky. I'd go with liverwurst or the freeze dried liver treats they have at pet supply stores, most of them love that stuff.
