If you are a moderate preterist then He did wrap things up.
Preterism holds that the events prophesized in the New Testament have already happened. The great war of Armageddon in the book of Revelation occurred in the late 60's and early 70's A.D., when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, many Jews were killed, and the remainder was driven from Palestine. Preterists also hold that when Christ talked about the end of the world, He did not mean that the end of the physical world. Rather Christ was teaching that the old worldview held by various contemporary Jewish groups was coming to an end, to be replaced by a new concept, the Kingdom of God. Accordingly, to the preterist all of the major elements in the book of Revelation (Tribulation, Armageddon, Rapture, etc.) actually took place in the first century CE. A moderate preterist believes that many future prophecies in the New Testament have already been fulfilled but some crucial prophecies, like the final resurrection, judgment, and literal Second Coming, have not yet been fulfilled.
Most of what you will read about the end times are pre-millennial views: the view that Christ's return will usher in a future millennium of Messianic rule mentioned in the book of Revelation before the final judgment. The believers of this doctrine also hold to the notion of a Rapture of the righteous beforehand.
Others hold that there will be only one second coming of Christ, at the time of the Final Judgment.
Then there are mixtures involving the views of the seven year tribulation and whether it is happening now, will happen later, etc.
These doctrines all fall under the general heading known as the study of end times, or eschatology.
For explanations of the various eschatological beliefs see: http://www.religioustolerance.org/millenni.htm

No. The problem is that this universe and creation has been corrupted with sin and thus needs to be recreated a new heaven and a new earth without sin. Everything needs to be made new. God is waiting for all his people to become saved then he can gather them together as one kingdom. He doesn't wish any of them to perish.
Remember that Jesus died for those whom He chose to save and hence there is only a limited amount of people that will ever become saved. I sincerely believe that once that last person whom Jesus died for becomes saved then the plan of God for this universe will have been completed and He will return at anytime. All of his people would have at that time crossed over the Red Sea.

You know, I for one, cannot wait till that second bible comes out where all the damned verses are like I Cr 13;8a
Maybe he's coming back because he liked it so much. You know, like I promise to go back to Florence. Only I don't feel like I've really let anybody down if I never actually go back (and maybe that's what god's thinking, sorry, I mean God or Her Majesty or whatever you call it).

Excellent question.
Jesus never said he was coming back. Paul said it as he traveled around what is now called the Middle East and into Rome. My guess is that he was dangling a carrot to get people to attend his sermons and convert. (Many people thought Jesus would return in their lifetimes, as per some of the verses in Paul's letters that are in the New Testament.) Over time, long past Paul's life, this carrot has segued into a ray of hope.
Just my opinion.

Well Dude, (that is a deep subject) but God gave man a chance to redeem himself and show how he can grow but coming back and forth to this little planet called earth. This is how we learn and this is a very difficult place to be...It is called "free will" God just does not step in one day and say "Gee I will fix everything"
We as humans have to work through life here ourselves...He gave us longer to fix ourselves or ruin ourselves...

My dates usually require me to come twice before they get wrapped up. Maybe God's doing funny stuff with the Earth?

his first coming did "wrap up things". his death sealed the fate of Satan and unrepentent sinners. his second coming is to just take what belongs to him. you and me.
