Catholic. And it would depend on rather you give him credit for the plague or not. They really didn't know that they were doing that part and that was the worst of it.

Catholic. He killed less people than Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln, the exact number is unknown. Like Abraham Lincoln, he fought on the side of the slaves against the rulers (who in this case were the blood thirsty Aztecs, not very nice people).
In that time, the most lethal wars so far were the ones fought by the Muslims. They completely destroyed entire cities in places like Spain. The Spanish Reconquista was also bloody, and perhaps part of the problem in the new world was a very bloody 2000 years under various conquests of Spain, a blood that existed in all religions, including pagan Romans and Vandals.
They exported this violence to the Americas, but the genocide was against the wishes of the pope (priests were Cortes' biggest critics, he did it for gold and for Spain and perhaps because he was disgusted at slavery, not for God).
Thankfully, Spain is now relatively peaceful. If a nation with so violent a history can have peace, there is hope for all humanity, whatever religion or culture.
