Why are religions so intolerant of people leaving their religion?

they need to set up a good example for other members of the faith not to dare and do the same. They hate everyone who posseses enough brains to see through the brainwashing.

You see, every organised religion is based on a large number of supporters. The worst thing for a religion is to lose it's supporters - believers. They will do whatever it takes to prevent that. If the threats with eternal fire aren't enough, they threaten you with more earthly stuff - prosecution, ridiculing, torture, death.

Anything but to let go of you and especially your money.

it is not all religions. the two you suggested are monotheistic. Monotheistic religions tend to have as a typical, there is in basic terms one thank you to enlightenment and that is our way. in case you % to no longer save on with their way, you're a sinner/infidel and unworthy of their persisted word. of course that isn't in basic terms monotheistic religions, yet they're the biggest contenders.
