It depends on the camera and the compression of the image.

I have a 10 MP Canon SD900 and the largest file size seems to be about 3.8-4.1 MB. (Largest dimension, highest resolution.)

My 10 MB Nikon D200 takes about 5.5-6.5 MB for the largest files.

As Dr Sam has shown you there can be huge differences. My D80 takes photos anywhere between 3.6 MB and 5.1 MB. So even two 10 MP cameras from the same manufacturer can vary. As Dr Sam correctly states this is due to the way the camera "makes" the jpeg image from what the camera sensor "sees" Some cameras will use aggressive compression to reduce file sizes whilst others will use a lot of memory to maintain image quality. The more compressed the image is, the lower the quality.

So whilst there is no clear answer to your question, there should be enough data here for you to at least get an idea.

Hope this helps.
