There are a lot of good ones out there - Over the hedge, Open Season, Cars (FULL of Cameos by famous people). Do get those - but if you want to really surprise him with something that will TOTALLY DAZZLE him and really work his young brain... get him the animusic DVD's!!! Absolutely STUNNING graphics sync'ed up to very tasteful, beautifully synthesized instrumental music.
Even you and your husband will enjoy watching them with him - again and again!! The first time you watch them, the strongest emotion you will feel is AWE!
Their website is below... view some video clip examples. Be aware that the low resolution samples don't do them much justice.

When my son was 5 he loved: Spongebob, the animated Spiderman and Batman movies, Peter Pan, Shrek 1&2, The Incredibles, the Superman movies. But why not try a few older movies that your husband may have loved when he was younger like; Journey to the Centre of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts. My little guy loved all of these as well and the whole family enjoyed them together.

Disney-Pixar has the BEST movies...Disney is generally for girls [Princesses etc] but Pixar has a lot of co-ed type movies...here are a few of my favorites:
1. Cars...Super funny and super fun!
2. Toy Story...Classic Pixar...I grew up with this!
3. Madagascar...This is actually a really funny movie you would enjoy watching it with your son
Honestly, I would pick Madagascar...try renting it first to see if he would like it [and to make sure it is appropriate enough for your taste...and it should be ;) ] and make sure you like it too!
He's probably going to ask you to sit down and watch it a million times and i sure wouldn't mind watching this movie a million times! :D

Hmmm...kinda depends on what u allow your child to watch. I prefer the older kid movies, just because it seems like they are more wholesome. Aladdin, Lion King, Pochohantas, hmm....more up to date...well i really liked Cars, there is also Iceage, Spongebob, and most def Madagascar. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN!!!
I'm 20 and this movie gets me everytime! It's a great blend or friendship, self pity, and the paranormal all in one movie. It was THE disney movie when I was growing up!
I think that it'll definately make your child ponder life's most serious mysteries.
