Symbols are good, Quotes if they are short.
If the quote is too long, it's like reading a t-shirt. Yuck.
Select a really good artist and discuss what you want.
It's your best bet to get exactly what you are looking for.

A circle. Kinda like the Circle of Life. A circle has no beginning, it has no end, and all parts of it are equal in curve and distance from the center. It is perfectly balanced. It's also the shape of the earth, and many other things in the universe (moons, rings, orbits, solar systems, etc). Just my thinking. If you're looking for something for a tattoo you could also put in your favorite thing in the circle just to make it a bit more interesting if you think a circle is too simple.

You could just get the Greek translation "gnothi seauton" tattooed.
