My son is normal in all ways, except he absolutely HATES to go to the Dr. Everytime we go in there, he screams his head off, even though they are not even doing anything to him. The Dr. asked me if he had ever been hospitalized, and he hasn't. How normal is this? Is this like some kind of phobia? Because I have a 6 year old that loved to go to the Dr. and I know that all kids are different, but........................

I never had any trouble with my 18month old either up until yesterday at the doctors. 3 weeks ago he was ill, didn't eat anything for 9 days. He went 4 times to the Dr in 6 days.

Yesterday he had to go for 18 month old injection and he hated just being there, screamed and played up the whole time.
But the funny part was he never cried when he got his jab. Now that's never happened before!

Is the doctors keeping him waiting, are they running behind time and your tot getting really bored and frustrated, especially being in a strange place, not his own home with his toys around?

The only time mine quietened down was when I gave him a pain biscuit, always have some handy in your handbag ...
:-)

my daughter does the same thing, it started at 12 month checkup. The only time she has been to the Dr is for her well-baby care, during which time she gets her shots. My Dr said that at 1 yr of age they do this, because they remember the last time...at her 18 month..she was fine in the waiting room, then as soon as they opened the door and called her name, she started crying and ran the other way. I had to chase her down..and she didnt shut up until we left.

My daughter pretty much does the same thing. (she'll be 2 in May.) Even when the nurse just measures her height, she screams and cries. I think she's always worried that she's going to get a shot, so no matter what they do she's expecting it to be painful. As soon as we walk out to the car, she's fine. I honestly think kids grow out of this after a while. Start taking him for a treat (ice cream or something) afterwards, and he'll start looking forward to that every time it's time to go to the doctor.

There are several children that have these fears. He probably remembers a time when he had shots, or he may not feel comfortable or maybe he doesn't really like people he doesn't know. It is hard to say what is causing him to be scared. You just need to reassure him that everything is going to be ok. This is a normal part of development (conquering fears) and your chance to help guide him through this stage. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Has the Doctor ever given him shots? Or any doctor for that matter? He will remember that, and associate the Doctor's office with shots and pain. He just doesn't trust the doctor, This is normal, it happens. He is fine though. Hope he gets better, he should with age, when he can talk and understand that nothing bad is going to happen.

totally normal. Is your son seeing a pediatrician? Because he should be pretty used to that reaction. Right around 13-18 months kids start to remember that everytime that someone in a white coat comes around it will end with a shot.

Maybe it's time to change the doctor my 4yr old was the same way ,we have a new doctor now and he makes her laugh. She cryes going in but always comes out laughing.I think your child senses something about this doctor ,and for him to ask has he been hospitalized before sounds like he's not very understanding with children!

They go through spurts of that, my daughter hated to go to the Dr. when she was younger, and she had been going to him since she was born, she is 7 now and is fine with it. My son on the other hand loves to go because he knows they have toys there, he hates to go to the babysitter, you would think I was beating him when we walk in the door, as soon as I leave he does fine and is happily playing when I return. That is completely normal...it will pass....Good Luck

Children at his age do not like strangers. If he does not go to the doctors alot, having someone poke and prod him that is a stranger is going to make him cry. Other than that, maybe he remembers a time he had a shot or something that was unpleasant done to him, that is why he cries like that.

this is normal. my daughter does it too. if she just sees a nurse she starts crying. i think she got it from me, when i was little, my mom had to hold my arms and legs or i would attack the dr. LOL. they remember what happens when they go to a dr, they usually get something stuck up their bottom, they get shots, or someone poking and prodding at their nose and ears. you can see why they hate doctors. LOL
