A buddy emailed me a MS Excel file as an attachment, and my OpenOffice won't open it....any suggestions?

Yes and it is even better than shareware. Microsoft actually has a program that

Microsoft puts out a program that allows you to view excel files but not modify them. The link is below.

You can try some of the on-line services like one from google

http://docs.google.com/

This site allow you to update word or spreadsheet documents and edit them on-line. You might need an account with google.
