Northern New Jersey, Westchester or Rockland County, NY, or southwestern Connecticut. They're all within 45 minutes' drive of Midtown, BUT you're going to spend pretty big bucks to live there.
(FYI - Scarsdale is one of the MOST expensive suburbs to live in)

AVOID Jersey... you'll hate the travelling time and car insurance prices there... plus... it isn't New York. I would recommend Westchester county... the closest possible to the Bronx, and Nassau County. You can live pretty much off the suburban life and take a short drive or more conveniently a Metro North or LIRR ride into the city if you feel the need for a change.
However, living in the 4 other boroughs is the best bet. Each neighborhood has its own identity and style. Public transportation is also THE BEST in the boroughs. It will cost you no more than $4 to get into the city.

I would say anything in about an hour travel time radius is fine. That's about where I live, on Long Island. Some parts of Jersey and Long Island are pretty far from Manhattan. The good thing is that all the public transportation is geared toward getting you to and from the city; it's really not a problem. But I understand your point. I personally would prefer to live further east on L.I., but my husband would spend his life commuting, and that's no good.

I would say the North Bronx, because you can easily jump on the train, or take the express bus to come to the city.

Come to Queens. More relaxed than manhattan and only a 10min train ride.
