I notice it most when it's in gear (either reverse or drive), the vehicle is stopped or almost stopped, and the steering wheel is turned. An example of a time this might happen would be when pulling into a parking space.

It is an intermittent problem that has noticably worsened.

The chatter is audible as well as palpable in the lines.

If anyone has any suggestions as to the cause and what needs to be replaced, I'd appreciate it very much.

Thank you!

Does it sound like a whine? kind of like the sound of a cat when it's mad?

That is usually the noise heard on the power steering of the aerostars.. and after checking for low fluid level (and make sure you are using Mercon transmission fluid..NOT POWER STEERING FLUID) .. it's probable air in the system....

There are ways to "bleed it" (basically turning the steering wheel back and forth with the van in the air) with extreme cases needing a pump...

Also make sure the lines aren't touching something else... after that would have to look at a professional to find out

Does it make a clicking sound? My 94 Aerostar is making a clicking sound very similar to your van. I would like to know whats going on too. My mechanic says its fine. I have had it in the shop 4 times for the same thing and he says nothing is wrong. I thought maybe the power steering fluid was low, but apparently not.
