What is the best way to refer to my future mother in law? Her husband, my fiances father, passed away a few years ago and she was remarried for a short period of time. She did not change her name when she was remarried. So do I call her Mrs. ___, Ms. ___, or by her first name. thanks!!

Did you ever get a card from her or a present? What did the enevelope or tag say? Whatever she signed it as, that's what you should call her unless she says otherwise.

When I first meet my FMIL, I didn't know what to call her. So, I just sat back and observed how other family members, and adults ( in my 20's) called her.

After a few brief meetings, I realized my FSIL was calling her by her first name. I figured I could do the same, and it worked out fine.

Observe her and those around her. If you are still second guessing yourself ask your fiance if she would be offended if you called her by her first name.

I have found most adults, including in-laws, like to be called by their first name. But, everyone is different.

Why don't you ask her? Explain that it is important to you and you want to know how she feels. Don't be embarrassed, she will probably be touched that you thought about her feelings.

I call my future mother-in-law by her first name, but I also knew her pretty well before I stated dating her son.

I call mine by her first name. We are both adults so I see nothing wrong with "Hello Kathy. How are you?" I would be weird for me to call my in-laws mom and dad.

But I agree with the previous poster also...just ask your fiance what her mother would prefer.

To be perfectly honest (and polite), just ASK the lady how she would like to be addressed when she is with you or you are introducing her!

I am sure she will be then THRILLED that you took the time to want to HEAR what she has to say, and that you will be able to RESPECT her wishes on how she wishes to be named or called or introduced by!
