Multiple Ways to Solve:
1.) Start with $30 (3 rooms/$10 ea.); Overcharged $5
~New Total for 3 rooms=$25; ea. man gets $1 back and bellhop keeps $2
~Start with $30, man A gets $1 now have $29; Man B gets $1 from the remaining $29 now have $28; Man C gets $1 from remaining $28 now have $27; Bellhop keeps $2 from remaining $27 now have $25
~$30-$5(refund)=$25
2.) Start with $30 (3 rooms/$10 ea.); Overcharged $5
~New Total for 3 rooms=$25; ea. man gets $1 back and bellhop keeps $2
~3 rooms at $9 per = $27
~Bellhop keeps $2 out of the $5 refunded; $27(remaining after ea. gets $1 back)-$2(bellhop)=$25
*$27-$2=$25

Three men each paid a net $9 (the original $10 less the $1 refund). That's a total of $27 they paid. The hotel received $25. The bellhop received $2.
Why would you add money paid to money received?

It's right...
$30 for the room
- $5 for the overcharge =
$25 for the total of the room.
$5 is the overcharge fee
-$3 ($1 to each person) =
$2 to the Bellhop.

no, it's right. we should add all the #s together. 10+10+10=30+5=35. so remember, we have $35 to work with.
each man receives a $1 refund, so it's $35-$3= $32. the bellhop keeps two dollars, so it's $32-$2 which is $30. What most people do is try to subtract, and it mess them up.

three man = $25
bell takes $2, refunds $3, 3 men = $28
therefore each man didn't pay $9, they paid $(28/3), with a combined tip of $2 "for" the bellhop.
You can't use ($10 - $1) since the rental is no longer 10 per person.

$10+$10+$10=30
but the actual charge is $25 so the owner gives them back$5 and each is given a share of$1 while the bellhope keeps $2 for himself so $5/3 =1.66$ must be the share given to each therefore $10-$1.66=8.44 must be the rent so 8.44+8.44+8.44+= 25 approx it has nt gt anything to do with the early 30$ calculation
