Golden's are more calm in the home that Labs but they are both well suited to a farm. The reason I would go for a Lab on a Farm is because a golden's fur would be more difficult to clean and groom because of its long fur. They would pick up more dirt and bristles and seeds and stuff so that would need major time for grooming. A lab has shorter course fur so it would not pick up so much debri commonly found on a farm. It would still need grooming but not as much as a golden. But before you go to a breeder or a pet store, I would check you local animal shelter to find a puppy that might suit your lifestyle perfectly, even though it isn't the exact breed you are looking for now. Good luck!!

Golden Retriever seems more cuddly. You could buy a Golden Retriever and then tell everyone it a Long Hair Yellow Labrador and have the best of both worlds.

True, they are very similar- but there are differences. Goldens obviously have the long hair while the lab has short hair- but they both still shed a lot. They require pretty much the same exercise needs (also depends on the specific dog) both are loyal and affectionate and will cuddle with you. Goldens are better party greeters but labs aren't far behind. Goldens have a little more energy as well (a typical one that is) Goldens need to be brushed every day labs you could skip a day.

Well, whichever one you like the best! Find a golden retriever you like and if you like it more than the lab you like the most get the retriever. If you like the lab better, get a lab! If you can't pick, have your parent pick and then give the dog to you as a surprise. Good Luck!

the problem is, it applies to both dogs! they're tame around people and gentle. but i think that as puppies, a lab is calmer, but as adults golden retrievers are calmer. Golden Retrievers are my favorite dogs, so no offense to labs but i say you get a golden. they're sweet, love to have fun, gentle, tame around people (well they have to be trained properly like any other dog), and they're just so wonderful.

Both shed...both are very popular...of the 2? the golden retriever might be a little smarter..IMO...BUT a farm? Lots of dirt to gather on the long hair..
If you don't mind the long hair? Look into leonbergers...a rare breed here in the states...VERY smart and loving...BUT they can be HUGE!

Depends on whether you like long hair or short hair, as that's the major difference between the two. Both dogs are people-oriented, extremely friendly, and well-suited to life in the great outdoors.

Both are great dogs. My moms lab is a great watch dog. My aunts retriever was a very nice dog. I think you should get a German Shepherd. They are great watch dogs, great best friend, loyal, smart.
