After watching the News and seeing a big pile of blown up Hummvees it took me back to my first ride in one back in 93 in Somalia the thing broke down 5 miles out of the compound we had to sit in all round defence for a hour and a half waiting for a recker to drag it back. To me it was over the top it's like the Yanks have to shout everywhere they go, what was wrong with the Mutt or our Land rover every US troop we had loved driving our Lany's....

The hummer is a damn fine military vehicle but as others have said make sure you comapre it to the role it is suppose to play. As far as reliability, you will see the same thing said about any military hardware. One fellow will tell you about how so and so gun jammed all the time and totally sucked and fellow two will tell you how he used it for years and had no problems with it and never met anyone who did. I can say this: I have a $30 floor jack tha i have used for 15 years and has yet to crap out on me. When I worked in an auto shop we used $120 floor jacks and went through about one a year it seemed. Where we getting ripped off? Hell no, the stresses of daily shop duty do not compare to that of home use. And the same is true for the Hummer. Considerign all it is asked to due, all the roles it supports as well as the enviroments it's put into it performs better then anything out there. The Willy was a fien vehicle, but the Hummer can carry a much larger payload, get's better traction, is much more difficult to get stuck, more resistant to roll over and can also serve as weapon platforms that the willeys couldnt. Can you really picture a large rocket artillery organ on a willies? As far as "blown up" last I checked a blast that will end a hummer would also end a land rover, and the rover has a higher profile. Thats not to say the hummer is the end all be all, it is simply one step to a better platform that will constantly evolve. maintanance is also more inexpensive on the hmve due to the number of components it shares with massed produced civillian gm vehicles. War is money, and battles are more often won by who has the most cash and can field the most supplies and equipment. BTW if you ever get to drive one, or a civillian h1, its a hell of an off-road toy

Whatever happened to the "Champ. That was an Army vehicle second to none which was widely used by the Army in the 50s. Rolls Royce engine and capable of being driven underwater and fitted with a snorkel to do so. 4 wheel drive and great road holding and all terrain.

I drove 2 Landrovers in Iraq. One was rollcaged with weapons mounts in front and rear. second was a white Civvie style 110 for inside the wire. IMO Both sucked Ballz, The ATV was More reliable than those shiterovers. Get it up past 40 and it starts shaking it self to pieces. The M1114 I had for the next 7 months was a Godsend compared to Landrovers. However any vehicle needs proper care and Maintenance.

Yeah the HMMWV is easily blown up and you might think it sucks but it is a pretty good vehicle for driving through mud and getting through tough terrain. A properly PMCS'ed vehicle can run forever. You still see the old deuce and a halfs running around. I think the HMMWV's shouldnt be used anymore for patroling through war zones, the army needs to spend their money on better combat vehicles like more strykers and buffalo's and cougars.

A lot of people here have missed the point. The Humvee is one of the safest vehicles ever produced.I don't know about the latest figures but up to two years ago though troops had been injured not a single US soldier had been killed outright in one even after hitting mines so if they get wrecked who cares as long as the troops get out.I'm English and think its about time we got them.

Land rovers are on of the most reliable vehicles on the planet but they're not obnoxious enough for the american establishment. I'm sure their own soldiers would prefer something that isn't going to break down in the middle of a war zone as well. Buy British!

What the heck is wrong with a WWII Jeep? They were a worthy vehicle, rugged and lasting, and got over 30mpg. Best 4WD ever built.

We pushed about 40,000 off the end of carriers after WWII off the Japanese coast, then sent scrap iron th the japanese to rebuild with. Hooray, USA!

ANYWAY, the blown up Humvees are because the Bush admistration did not plan ahead. Humvees were not designed to take on mines and other explosives, and are not all that well designed for urban combat.
they are mobile goanywhere transport vehicles, a job they do well. we have Tanks and Strykers that are designed for the combat roles that they have been using the hummers for.
We also have the Bushmaster, which is designed to take on the IEDs that have decimated many Hummers. Too bad Bush is an idiot and doesn't know how to go in prepared
