Because they want you to buy more buns then you need. You could buy 5 packs of buns and 4 packs of hot dogs. Then you'd be at an even amount. There are also the accidents..dropping some hotdogs on the ground. If you happen to drop 2 then you still have enough for the buns!

This is one of those "park in the driveway/drive in the parkway" questions but I'll take a serious shot at it anyway.

It basically boils down to the fact that breadmakers and meat processing plants are two different places and they never really got together on the subject. 10 is also not a standard for hot dogs, although it is the most common. Hot dogs are sold by wholesalers by how many there are in a pound. So you can buy 8-dogs (8 to a pound), 12-dogs (12 to a pound) and even 4-dogs (yikes! Big dogs!). 10 is a nice even number which makes for easy inventory. If you have a thousand packages then you know you have 10,000 hot dogs.

The bun thing is a little tougher to explain, although some commercial bakeries do make 10-packs. Some have posited that bakers, in general, like to work with numbers that go into twelve evenly, i.e., 3, 4, 6.

Two seperate companies. And not all hot dogs come 10 in a pack. If you do not like it, buy the 8 count hot dogs. Then the buns and dogs match. Feel better now?

so you have to buy 4 packs of hotdogs and 5 packs of buns just to make 'er even with forty of each instead of being two short as in your example. That way they make a bigger profit!

But seriously though, i live in Canada and both Bens and Wonder sell hotdog buns in packs of 12 and almost all of our hotdog brands come in packs of 12...about the only brand that might not all come in packs of 12 is Maple Leaf...some of theres come in 12's and some come in 8's just depends on if you want the fat hot dogs or the normal ones.

I was told that it was a conspiracy thought up long ago so that you continually keep buying one product or the other. But now some companies sell hot dogs in packs of 8, so you could buy those instead.

Hot dogs and buns both come 8 in a package.

Its the Kosher hot dogs that come 6,7,8 or, 9 in a package.

I believe it's because those hot dogs are packaged by weight and not by quantity.

That is a GREAT question!! Goes to show how wasteful Americans are!! Could you imagine how many people throw out those extra hot dogs because they don't have anymore buns left??
