Sorry about your plight but in my opinion we take in way too many immigrants as it is, we take in more immigrants than the EU and Russia combined. But the wait could be do to the problem we have with millions of illegals who are constantly streaming into our country. Hopefully we will deport these criminals soon and then we can get back to business as usual. Good Luck and hopefully welcome.

I know exactly how you feel - took me over 14 years to obtain my citizenship! I have to wait for about a year after the interview before everything OK.

It's all depends on how many times you moved. Believe it or not they actually check out all the address you listed on the application.

After waiting for more than 12 years, I became impatient and contacted the governor, the congressman in my area and both of the senators of my states. Finally, one of the senator assigned one of his staff member to guide me through the proper steps to obtain the citizenship.

I do not think anyone can really help speeding up the background process but don't give up. Try your senators.

I know it is frustrating because here we are trying to do the right thing abiding the laws so that we can get better life. And it took us a lot of time and money to get the proper document to give us the freedom to that life. On the other hand, illegal immigrants just walk right in and made themself at home.

Just hanging there and best of luck.

I'm an immigration attorney and have LOTS of clients in your exact position. Problem is there is no way around the FBI name check. Some of my client would rather wait for the name check to clear, and other would prefer to take action. The action to take would be to file a lawsuit called a Mandamus against the government. In this lawsuit you're basically asking the a federal judge to force USCIS to do their job and finish processing your case in a timely manner. We've had positive results with this, but there's also been no result from this. Sometimes the judge will say, it doesn't matter that the FBI name check is taking long; USCIS is ensuring national security and doing their job. Other times, the judge will force a decision to be made in the case within a certain number of days. Hope that helps.

They have to wait so long because our government is beyond screwed up in this area. Yes, we need to know who is crossing our borders and yes, we need to make sure they're not just here to kill us. Legalization, however, is such a selectuve process that it's practically unattainable for the majority of hard working, decent immigrants.

In one case, a man living legally in the US for 20 years had applied for citizenship but was yet to be accepted. His wife was also legal; his children were born here and were citizens. A succesful businessman, employing nearly 200 workers at his 5 companies, he was detained at the border of Mexico this past Christmas. The charge? 18 years ago, the money he was carrying when stopped by the police had cocaine residue on it. That may seem incriminating until you consider that most cash in the economy has some trace drugs on it.

Under retroactively applying laws (which violate ex post facto), he was detained for this minor infraction. Though he paid the fine, served his time, was legal and has moved on, this blip on his record has effectlvely shut down his businesses and left his family stranded... 18 years later.

You have it bad. It could still get a lot worse.

I would try talking to the ACLU. Maybe that's what you meant? Good luck with everything!

Legal immigrant must wait five years to prove they have intentions of staying in the States and helping the nation progress. The reason so much emphasis is being put on amnesty for illegal immigrants is because it is causing very big financial social health and educational problems that need to be addressed immediately. This is not fair for the legal immigrant that paid their dues worked hard and are upstanding members of our communities but then again life isn't always fair. The best thing to do is rally behind US citizens and let you voice be heard even though you do not have a vote you still have a voice, criminals should not be pardoned just because their are lots of them.

There are simply not enough people to work all of the files. Some of the files are actually missing. I would consider no news good news & hopefully you kept copies of all of your paperwork. If they are not together I would suggest sorting that out so if there are any questions, you have everything at your fingertips . This will show them that you are serious & professional. The more you antagonize them, the longer they will take, just keeep this in mind. I know that your frustratred and have every right to be. I glad you have done things legally, my great-grandparents did too. You will be so relieved when this is all over, just hang in there.

Yes I feel that more of our legal immigrants, should tell how they feel about all of this. I know how I'd feel if I had, payed all fees, did all paperwork, and then waited, sometimes for years, and then found out that, the country I came to, wanted to give illegal aliens amnesty.

We legal immigrants have to sit and wait while illegals have people fighting for their rights and government talking about them.

A legal resident not having US citizenship is still not a citizen. Other "Immigrants" have the same problems getting citizenship as you do. Potatoe /Potato.....
